Dortmund, July 2026: ICA Traffic GmbH is now also driving forward the digitalisation of public transport within the VRR network area: in a very short space of time, all existing fixed ICA ticket machines at Düsseldorf Airport have been fitted with the Traveller CLX validator for ID-based ticketing for use on the SkyTrain. This feature completely simplifies and digitises the ticket-purchasing process for passengers.

The SkyTrain, an automated people mover, connects the long-distance railway station, the P4/P5 car parks and the terminal at Düsseldorf Airport, and is a key component of passenger mobility at North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest airport. With the introduction of ID-based ticketing, using the system will become even more convenient in future: instead of a traditional paper ticket, a simple check-in and check-out at the Validator is all that is required.

“We are delighted to be able to provide a modern, seamless ticketing solution at Düsseldorf Airport with the CALO SkyTrain ticket,” says ICA’s Head of Operations, Ulrich Lange. “With our ID-based ticketing solution, Tap & Ride®, we are making ticketing simpler, faster and fully digital for passengers. As well as enabling ticket sales, the system also provides the necessary interoperability, for example for ticket inspection.”

This project is not just another ID-based ticketing project from ICA; it also marks the first project as part of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association’s (VRR) digitalisation drive. It represents another important step towards a future-proof, customer-friendly and digital ticketing system. Fares are calculated according to the eezy.NRW pricing logic.

ICA is also handling the entire technical integration: all fixed ticket machines will be fitted with the Traveller CLX validator; the CALO Skytrain ticket, based on the eezy.NRW fare logic, will be introduced and, in future, issued exclusively as an ID-based ticket via the validators. This enables passengers to use the system quickly and easily via the integrated check-in/check-out (CiCo) function.

With Tap & Ride®, ICA is thus supporting the move towards open, connected ticketing systems. Passengers benefit from intuitive use without needing to know the fare structure, whilst transport operators benefit from standardised processes and a future-proof infrastructure. The roll-out at Düsseldorf Airport exemplifies how modern ticketing solutions can efficiently complement existing transport services and drive forward the digital transformation of public transport.
