First network-wide ID-based ticketing project in Germany at NVM

ID-based ticketing for the Mainfranken Local Transport Authority

The challenge:
The Mainfranken Local Transport Authority (NVM) was tasked with introducing a modern ticketing system that would operate across the entire network whilst accommodating different fares, usage scenarios and payment methods. The aim was to significantly simplify access to public transport whilst ensuring interoperability and efficient ticket validation.

The solution:
With Tap & Ride®, ICA Traffic is implementing an ID-based ticketing system across the network that operates entirely digitally and without the need for traditional ticket purchases. Passengers simply check in and out using a card or smartphone, whilst the best fare is calculated automatically in the background. ICA’s central backend system ensures that transport operators can monitor payments, tap-ins and tap-outs in real time. Passengers can keep track of their travel entitlements at all times via the customer portal and can, for example, download receipts for travel expense claims directly.

The result:
The new system enables significantly simpler, barrier-free access to public transport whilst simultaneously increasing transparency and efficiency for transport operators. With its introduction, the NVM is setting a nationwide milestone for modern, interoperable ticketing in public transport.
