[CASE STUDY]

ID-based ticketing in the VRR – Tap & Ride® on the Düsseldorf SkyTrain

ICA introduces ID-based ticketing to the VRR: Tap & Ride® at Düsseldorf Airport

The challenges:
Düsseldorf Airport wanted to make using the SkyTrain easier and more digital for passengers. The existing paper-based ticketing system was to be replaced by a modern solution that simplifies ticket purchase whilst integrating seamlessly with existing systems. Furthermore, the project was intended to mark the start of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association’s (VRR) digitalisation drive.

The solution:
ICA Traffic supplemented all existing fixed ICA ticket machines at Düsseldorf Airport with the Validator Traveller CLX and implemented the ID-based ticketing solution Tap & Ride® for use on the SkyTrain. Passengers can now conveniently use the SkyTrain by simply checking in and out, without the need for a paper ticket. At the same time, the CALO SkyTrain ticket was technically integrated in line with the eezy.NRW fare logic, ensuring the necessary interoperability for ticket sales and validation.

The result:
With the introduction of Tap & Ride®, ticketing for the SkyTrain has been fully digitised and made significantly more convenient. Passengers benefit from an intuitive user experience that requires no knowledge of fare structures, whilst the airport and the VRR can rely on a future-proof, standardised ticketing infrastructure. The project also marks the successful launch of the first ID-based ticketing project as part of the VRR’s digitalisation drive.
